Summary
It is really great when we (the family) all get together, but last week we got together for the first time in ages, months and months. I couldn't handle it because we all got excited, we all wanted to talk at once, and I couldn't follow them. I got a bit upset because I said ‘you are the closest members of the family, the closest to me, but I am having to struggle to understand what is going on. I don't feel I should have to struggle in the family – maybe outside, but not in the family’.
Janet, 22 years, oralIn general, as sons and daughters move through their teens and into adult life the relationship with the parents develops and changes. Often during adolescence there are periods when the relationship is fraught and many see this as a necessary part of the evolving relationship. By the time early adulthood is reached, however, the relationships become more stable and this seemed the case for many in the sample. As with hearing families, topics of conversation varied from family to family.
