Summary
The Dissolution of the Monasteries did not mean that they were totally eradicated. Although many were simply abandoned, substantial numbers became parish churches, cathedrals, hospitals, schools, and university colleges. They thus preserved some functions, even if different from their original founding purpose. Many monastic complexes became stately homes for wealthy friends and servants of the king.
